VO Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith encourages Thaxang community’s organic farming
INTRO: Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith has called on residents of Thaxang village in Vientiane’s Pakngum district to expand their organic vegetable farming, which has succeeded in contributing to improved community livelihoods.
STORY: Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith made the call during his visit to the community on Wednesday the 22nd of November as part of his one-day tour to assess development in the district.
Thaxang is a village located near the Nam Ngum River which was established in 1973, and currently has around 850 residents with a majority being Meuy ethnic people who moved from Borikhamxay province. Residents cultivate rice on 150 hectares in the wet season and 80 hectares in the dry season while 82 families in the village members of the organic vegetable farming group which was set up by the community themselves in 2010 with ten million kip in start-up funds.
According to the village head Thatsany Philavong, their crops have received One District One Product status and each member of the farming group generated at least one million kip per week as around 80 percent of the crops they supply to market were sold,.
In his address to the meeting with the community, Prime Minister Thongloun reminded the residents about the growing awareness in organic food around the world, and the support of the international community for the country’s efforts to promote organic vegetables, rice, fruit and other produce to boost the economy. He noted the importance of improving standards, including packaging for organic products, which he said would assist with exports.
The PM said. “Producing and exporting organic vegetable, fruit, rice and chemical-free food means we can help people around the world be healthy. Your village is an inspiration for this model. Please realise it,” . The farmers have 215 hectares of organic cultivation, including 275 vegetable shade houses and water from a bore well is used to irrigate the area which is quite far from the Nam Ngum riverbank.
